03 Oct 2024 Presentation about Immigrants in Maine Oct 03, 2024 7:15 AM - 8:30 AM “Let's Have a Conversation” Presentation to the Eliot and South Berwick Rotary Club on Thursday, October 3 at 7:15 am to talk about the experience of asylum seekers in Maine and those who support them. It's an opportunity to learn more and to find out the many ways community leaders and members can help. Presenters: Mulenga Mutapa is the Multicultural Outreach Worker for York County Community Action Corp (YCCAC). Mulenga has spent the last few years supporting those seeking asylum in York County and has been on the ground helping to settle the 400+ Angolan, Haitian, and Congolese asylum seekers who arrived in Sanford last year. Mulenga is here today to speak to YCCAC’s role in the process of settling asylum seekers, in terms of employment and economic opportunity, and how asylum seekers are giving back to the community. Ruben Luna Torres joined the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition (MIRC) in October 2022 as a passionate advocate for immigrant rights and community empowerment. In his role as Advocacy, Communications, and Policy Manager he collaborates with community partners across Maine to develop MIRC’s policy priorities. Torres often works with government officials in Augusta and city halls throughout the state. Torres’ advocacy efforts also include promoting the organization through both traditional and social media channels.
