Rotarian and retired educator, Skip Cousens, presents award to Nathan Michaelis
The Student of the Month recognition was given to Nathan Michaelis from Marshwood Middle School. His parents, sister and brother were all there, as was the assistant principal, Kevin Fillion, and Nathan's social studies teacher, Stephanie Thompson.
Thompson described Nathan as leading through "quiet, consistent, strength," which she noted is rare. He also makes it a point to greet all his teachers, waiting patiently until they are available, "a small gesture we all appreciate." He notices things other students miss, like trash left on the ground or equipment not put away, she said, and he takes care of it, not for recognition but "because that is who he is."
In a follow-up message, Nathan wrote, "Thank you so much for inviting me to breakfast last week. It was really nice to see how your organization helps people in so many ways."
Since he gets to choose a cause of his choice to which we will make a donation in his honor, he has told us, "I would really like the $100 donation to go to 'No Kid Hungry'. I really believe that every child should have basic nutrition and the ability to know that food is available."
We totally agree and thank Nathan for his caring about the well-being of others.
