OUR CLUB AND DISTRICT 7780 SUPPORTS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF IN ZAMBIA
Thanks to a district grant and funds from the South Berwick - Eliot Rotary Club, and following a district team visit to Zambia in February/March 2023 by two of our club members (Richard Donhauser, team leader, and Helen Goransson), the DeSanto Centre for the Deaf in Livingstone, Zambia was provided a brand-new refrigerator, computer tablets, and internet equipment and services to help the deaf students who attend that school. The deaf students served by the school for the deaf learn sign language and receive an education, thanks to the work and vision of school founder Lisa Zahra. Students who would normally not receive an education due to their disability are transported by the school from their villages and receive 2 nutritious meals per day while there now that the center has received a new refrigerator from us, and the younger students can begin and reinforce their learning of sign language with the aid of the computer tablets. Tablets are also used to teach students how to access the Internet, thanks to the purchase of a modem and funding for internet services. "We are beyond grateful," writes Lisa Zahra. These students would have had no future were it not for this school for the deaf, and when the visiting team saw them in action, they were moved to help them upon their return our club members applied for the district grant. It was a wonderful gift they could give the school and its students and staff.
